The Ravensburger Hütte (1,948m) is a high-altitude sanctuary in the Lechquellen Mountains. Starting from the turquoise Spullersee—a high-alpine reservoir—the trail offers a relatively gentle approach to a classic Austrian Alpine Club (DAV/AV) hut. The scenery is dominated by the 'Rote Wand' (Red Wall), a massive limestone face that glows deep amber at sunset. The area is a labyrinth of karst formations and lush meadows, perfect for spotting marmots and experiencing the quiet side of the Arlberg.

As an Official Marked Trail, the 16km guided tour from Puerto Villamil transitions from humid highlands into one of the largest calderas on Earth. The floor of the 10km-wide Sierra Negra caldera is covered in black basaltic lava flows. Beyond the main rim, the trail continues to the Volcán Chico lava fields, where geothermal activity has created a landscape of colorful sulfur deposits and parasitic vents. The HikeMetrics Hazard Scale is a proprietary 5-point classification system that evaluates hiking routes across five dimensions: physical demand, technical complexity, altitude exposure, weather risk, and rescue accessibility.

Unlike generic star ratings, the Hazard Scale is calibrated against altitude profiles, elevation gain per day, and logistical isolation factors — making it the most precise route classification system available.

Ravensburger Hütte — The Rote Wand Panorama
STANDARD // RT
alpine weather rapidity: The Lechquellen mountains are open to weather from the west; storms can arrive quickly.
Route B // Hazard Verdict
Sierra Negra Volcano & Volcán Chico
STANDARD // RT
extreme equatorial heat and lack of shade: The hike over the lava fields is completely exposed, and the black rock absorbs and radiates heat, making ground temperatures much higher than the air.
unstable and sharp lava terrain: Lava rock (Aa and Pahoehoe) is incredibly sharp and brittle; a simple fall can result in deep cuts.
