Sierra Negra Volcano Hike Galápagos. Sierra Negra is a massive shield volcano on the southern end of Isabela Island, Ecuador, within the Galápagos National Park. As an Official Marked Trail, the 16km guided tour from Puerto Villamil transitions from humid highlands into one of the largest calderas on Earth. The floor of the 10km-wide Sierra Negra caldera is covered in black basaltic lava flows. Beyond the main rim, the trail continues to the Volcán Chico lava fields, where geothermal activity has created a landscape of colorful sulfur deposits and parasitic vents. Note: The information on this page is for general guidance. Trail conditions and safety regulations can change. Mandatory naturalist guides are required for all visitors. Compiled from publicly available sources — not a field report.
Mission Directive / X-Factor
“The Giant Void and the Martian Vents. The primary draw is the scale of the Sierra Negra caldera and the active geothermal features of Volcán Chico. Walking through the lava fields, with steam vents (fumaroles) and the Pacific Ocean visible on the horizon, offers a direct look at the volcanic processes that continue to shape the archipelago.”
Hazard Assessment
The hike over the lava fields is completely exposed, and the black rock absorbs and radiates heat, making ground temperatures much higher than the air.
MITIGATION: Carry at least 3 liters of water; wear high-quality UPF clothing and a wide-brimmed hat; the standard guided tour from Puerto Villamil usually departs at 07:00 AM.
Lava rock (Aa and Pahoehoe) is incredibly sharp and brittle; a simple fall can result in deep cuts.
MITIGATION: Wear sturdy, closed-toe hiking shoes or boots with thick soles; do not wander off the designated park trails; use trekking poles for extra balance on uneven basalt sections.
During the cool season, 'garúa' mist can descend rapidly, reducing visibility to meters and making the featureless lava fields difficult to navigate.
MITIGATION: A certified naturalist guide is mandatory by law—always stay within sight of your guide; carry a lightweight rain jacket for the damp highland section.
