Into the belly of the wadi. Muqal Cave is located at the upper reaches of Wadi Bani Khalid—Oman's most famous and accessible year-round wadi. The trail starts from the large, palm-fringed swimming pools and climbs about 1 kilometer deeper into the canyon over white limestone boulders and narrow paths. The hike culminates at the entrance of the Muqal Cave, where visitors can crawl through a narrow opening to discover a vast, dark subterranean chamber with underground river systems and unique rock formations. The HikeMetrics Hazard Scale is a proprietary 5-point classification system that evaluates hiking routes across five dimensions: physical demand, technical complexity, altitude exposure, weather risk, and rescue accessibility.

Unlike generic star ratings, the Hazard Scale is calibrated against altitude profiles, elevation gain per day, and logistical isolation factors — making it the most precise route classification system available.

Route A // Hazard Verdict
Muqal Cave Trail
STANDARD // RT
claustrophobia and darkness: The cave entrance is narrow, and the interior is pitch black. This can be distressing for some visitors.
slippery rock surfaces: The path to the cave involves walking over wet limestone that has been polished by thousands of visitors and is extremely slippery.
Route B // Hazard Verdict
Three Capes Track
STANDARD // RT
maritime wind exposure: The Tasman Peninsula is directly exposed to Southern Ocean frontal systems, which can deliver high-velocity gusts and sudden thermal shifts.
topographical exposure: Portions of the track follow cliff lines reaching 300 meters. While the path is wide, these sections remain unfenced in several areas.
