Grossglockner — The Gamsgrubenweg Trail

STANDARD // RT
Full Route Report

Starting at the end of the high-alpine Grossglockner High Alpine Road (Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe), the Gamsgrubenweg is a masterpiece of high-altitude trail engineering. It contours high above the Pasterze, Austria's largest glacier, leading into the heart of the Hohe Tauern National Park. The trail passes through several tunnels built to protect hikers from rockfall, eventually opening into the vast, tundra-like 'Gamsgrube' (Chamois Pit), a special protection zone where the rare flora and fauna of the high Alps thrive in the shadow of the Grossglockner (3,798m).

Longji Rice Terraces (Dragon's Backbone)

STANDARD // RT
Full Route Report

Located deep in the misty mountains outside Guilin in southern China, the Longji (Dragon's Backbone) Rice Terraces offer one of the most serene, visually stunning, and culturally immersive hikes in Asia. Cultivated over 650 years by the Zhuang and Yao ethnic minority agricultural communities, the mountainsides are carved into hundreds of cascading, ribbon-like stepped terraces that trace the contours of the slopes perfectly. A classic half-day or full-day hike involves walking the narrow, stone-paved paths that connect the deeply traditional wooden stilt-house villages, most notably Ping'an, Dazhai, and Tiantouzhai. The hike weaves directly through the working rice paddies, ascending to high panoramic viewpoints (like 'Seven Stars with Moon') before dropping back into the valleys.

The HikeMetrics Hazard Scale is a proprietary 5-point classification system that evaluates hiking routes across five dimensions: physical demand, technical complexity, altitude exposure, weather risk, and rescue accessibility.

Unlike generic star ratings, the Hazard Scale is calibrated against altitude profiles, elevation gain per day, and logistical isolation factors — making it the most precise route classification system available.

Route A // Hazard Verdict
Grossglockner — The Gamsgrubenweg Trail
STANDARD // RT
high topographical exposure: The trail stays consistently above 2,300m, where UV radiation is intense and oxygen is thinner.
rockfall potential: The steep walls of the Fuscher-Kar-Kopf above the trail are prone to shedding rock.
Route B // Hazard Verdict
Longji Rice Terraces (Dragon's Backbone)
STANDARD // RT
slippery flagstones: The narrow paths between villages are made of smooth, worn bluestone slabs that become incredibly slick during the region's frequent monsoon rains.
