Lac de Gaube via Pont d'Espagne

STANDARD // RT
Full Route Report

The ascent to Lac de Gaube, starting from the Pont d'Espagne near Cauterets, is one of the most accessible and celebrated mountain walks in the Parc National des Pyrénées. This 8.2km out-and-back route climbs through pine forests following the Gave des Oulettes mountain stream, reaching the glacially-fed lake at 1,725 meters. The destination is noted for its view of the Vignemale (3,298m), the highest peak in the French Pyrenees, whose North Face provides a dramatic backdrop to the turquoise waters. The trail follows a section of the GR10 and is a staple of regional tourism due to its combination of scenic impact and moderate physical demand. Full Route Report

Standing as a natural balcony opposite the demandingly vertical walls of the Hochkönig (2,941m), the Hochkeil is an approachable peak that offers one of the best effort-to-view ratios in the Salzburger Land. Starting from the Arthurhaus alpine inn, the trail winds through lush high-alpine meadows and scattered pine trees to a broad, flat summit across from the 'Mandlwände'. Because the area is often overshadowed by the more famous Königssee or Zell am See, the Hochkeil remains remarkably quiet and popular with locals.

The HikeMetrics Hazard Scale is a proprietary 5-point classification system that evaluates hiking routes across five dimensions: physical demand, technical complexity, altitude exposure, weather risk, and rescue accessibility.

Unlike generic star ratings, the Hazard Scale is calibrated against altitude profiles, elevation gain per day, and logistical isolation factors — making it the most precise route classification system available.

icy forest paths: Because the ascent follows a deep, rocky stream bed through thick pines, the path remains in deep shade. It is often covered in ice patches in May or October.
severe overcrowding: This is one of the 'Grands Sites' of the Pyrenees. In July and August, the path turns into a continuous line of hikers, destroying the tranquility of the valley.
Route B // Hazard Verdict
Hochkeil — The Hidden Panorama
LOW // ACCESS
weather exposure: No major objective hazards in normal conditions, though the summit is exposed to the elements.
