Overview
Technical Summary
Standing as a natural balcony opposite the demandingly vertical walls of the Hochkönig (2,941m), the Hochkeil is an approachable peak that offers one of the best effort-to-view ratios in the Salzburger Land. Starting from the Arthurhaus alpine inn, the trail winds through lush high-alpine meadows and scattered pine trees to a broad, flat summit across from the 'Mandlwände'.
The Mandlwände Sentinel. The 'X-Factor' is the proximity to the Mandlwände rock needles. From the summit of the Hochkeil, it feels like you can reach out and touch the jagged limestone spires across the valley. It is a cinematic landscape that looks like the Italian Dolomites but is located in the heart of Austria. The quieter atmosphere at the top, away from the major tourist hubs, provides a peaceful alternative.
Hazard Assessment
No major objective hazards in normal conditions, though the summit is exposed to the elements.
