Full Route Report

Besseggen Ridge is arguably Norway's most famous and beloved day-hike, situated in the heart of Jotunheimen National Park ('Home of the Giants'). The7-mile (14km) point-to-point trek is internationally renowned for the staggering visual contrast it offers from its highest point (1,743m): looking down on one side at the deep, emerald-green, glacier-fed Gjende lake (nearly 1,000m below), and on the other side at the deep-blue Bessvatnet lake (400m below). The hike is physically demanding, involving steep, rugged terrain and a famous steep rock scramble along the narrowest part of the knife-edge ridge.

Full Route Report

Considered a premier multi-day trekking route in Los Glaciares National Park, the Huemul Circuit provides a circumnavigation of Cerro Huemul near El Chaltén. The route crosses two significant passes—Paso del Viento and Paso Huemul—offering direct panoramas of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field. Terrain varies from forested valley floors and river crossings to exposed glacial moraines and high-altitude scree slopes. The circuit is defined by its remoteness and the requirement for technical river crossing skills using fixed steel cables.

LETHAL // NO-MARGIN

The HikeMetrics Hazard Scale is a proprietary 5-point classification system that evaluates hiking routes across five dimensions: physical demand, technical complexity, altitude exposure, weather risk, and rescue accessibility.

Unlike generic star ratings, the Hazard Scale is calibrated against altitude profiles, elevation gain per day, and logistical isolation factors — making it the most precise route classification system available.

Route A // Hazard Verdict
Besseggen Ridge
SERIOUS // HIGH CONSEQUENCE
exposed scrambling and vertigo: The central Besseggen ridge itself is a steep, rocky scramble where you should use your hands. It is highly exposed to massive drops on both sides.
rapid alpine weather shifts: Jotunheimen weather is notoriously volatile. A sunny valley start can turn into a freezing, white-out blizzard with zero visibility on the ridge in 30 minutes.
Route B // Hazard Verdict
Huemul Circuit
LETHAL // NO-MARGIN
extreme_winds: Winds on the high passes can be severe, particularly in summer afternoons. Gusts may make progress slow and unstable.
river_tyrolean_traverse: Two river crossings require the use of fixed steel cables (tyrolean traverses) and specialized gear.
