Route Snapshot

This route covers 14km return. It involves around 1,100m of cumulative elevation gain.

The route reaches roughly 1,743m at its highest point. While the altitude is moderate, weather exposure and wind can make conditions feel more demanding than the elevation suggests.

Technically, the Besseggen Ridge standard trail is challenging. The primary difficulty is the sustained physical effort required or technical terrain features.

Technical Summary

Besseggen Ridge is arguably Norway's most famous and beloved day-hike, situated in the heart of Jotunheimen National Park ('Home of the Giants'). The7-mile (14km) point-to-point trek is internationally renowned for the staggering visual contrast it offers from its highest point (1,743m): looking down on one side at the deep, emerald-green, glacier-fed Gjende lake (nearly 1,000m below), and on the other side at the deep-blue Bessvatnet lake (400m below).

The Crux

The Two-Colored Lakes. The 'X-Factor' is the optical illusion created by the two lakes flanking the ridge. Because Glacier lake Gjende sits 400 vertical meters lower than the rain-fed Bessvatnet lake, when standing on the ridge you look down at a vibrant green lake on your right, and a separate, deep blue lake on your left, separated only by a sliver of rock. It is one of the most photographed natural viewpoints in Scandinavia.

Ideal For
You should have previous mountain hiking experience, be comfortable using your hands to scramble over sharp rocks, and have very strong cardiovascular fitness.
Risk Level
Moderate technically, but severe weather-dependent endurance.
Why Choose This
Standard safety protocols and localized hazard assessments based on park regulations.

Hazard Assessment

What is the most dangerous section of the Besseggen Ridge?
exposed scrambling and vertigo

The central Besseggen ridge itself is a steep, rocky scramble where you should use your hands. It is highly exposed to massive drops on both sides.

Recommended Mitigation
Do not attempt if you have a severe fear of heights. Hike the route from Memurubu to Gjendesheim so you climb *up* the steepest section rather than climbing down it.View Hazard Classification Scale →
rapid alpine weather shifts

Jotunheimen weather is notoriously volatile. A sunny valley start can turn into a freezing, white-out blizzard with zero visibility on the ridge in 30 minutes.

Recommended Mitigation
Constantly check the local weather app (Yr.no). Never hike in high winds or rain, as the rock scramble becomes severely slippery.View Hazard Classification Scale →

Technical Profile

REF ID // BES-2026

Vertical Ascent Profile

A demanding profile. If hiking the recommended direction (Memurubu to Gjendesheim), the route starts with a massive, immediate 500m climb out of the valley, rolls gently across the plateau past Bessvatnet, then aggressively tackles the steep 250m rock-scramble up the Besseggen ridge itself, before a long, knee-punishing 700m descent back to Gjendesheim.

Terrain Characteristics

Scramble terrain (Class 2) — involves fixed-rope sections or often required hand-use on steep terrain.

The cumulative energy expenditure for Besseggen Ridge represents a significant physical commitment. Success requires adequate preparation and moisture management.

Route Questions

01

Which direction should I hike?

Take the ferry to Memurubu and walk back to Gjendesheim. This allows you to climb UP the steep, scary ridge. Walking the other way means you have to climb DOWN the cliff face while staring at the 1,000m drop, which paralyzes many hikers. It also removes the stress of missing the last return boat.

02

Do permit rules stay constant year-round?

Not always. Permit and guide requirements can change by season and region. Verify the latest rules with the official park office or local authority before departure.

03

What is the safest start-time strategy?

Start early and plan to clear exposed sections before midday. This reduces heat, storm, and visibility risk on most mountain routes.

04

How much water capacity is usually needed?

For exposed hiking days, carrying 2-3 liters is common. Increase capacity when refill reliability is low or temperatures are high.

05

Is mobile signal reliable on route?

Coverage is often patchy outside towns and major valleys. Treat phones as secondary tools and carry offline navigation resources.
