Ausangate Circuit (The Sacred Apu)

EXTREME // LETHAL
Full Route Report

The high-altitude heart of the Inca world. The Ausangate Circuit is a strenuous but scenic 70km loop around the highest peak in southern Peru. Unlike the busy Inca Trail, this trek is wild, high, and deeply traditional. The route moves through the Vilcanota Range, crossing multiple passes over 5,000m. Hikers are treated to a surreal landscape of turquoise, red, and emerald-green glacial lakes (the 7 Lagoons), massive hanging glaciers, and the multi-colored mineral stripes of Vinicunca (Rainbow Mountain). You share the trail primarily with indigenous herders and their vast flocks of alpacas, offering a glimpse into a way of Andean life that has remained unchanged for centuries.

Full Route Report

This two-day Patagonia hike leads to Refugio Otto Meiling on the slopes of Cerro Tronador, one of the most prominent peaks in the Bariloche region. The route climbs through coihue and lenga forests before emerging onto a high rocky ridge that culminates at the refuge (1,905m). Positioned between the Castaño Overa and Alerce glaciers, the stay offers a unique opportunity to witness active glacial calving. The trail follows a well-defined path of forest floor and alpine rock, with a final sustained push to reach the rocky spine where the hut perches.

The HikeMetrics Hazard Scale is a proprietary 5-point classification system that evaluates hiking routes across five dimensions: physical demand, technical complexity, altitude exposure, weather risk, and rescue accessibility.

Unlike generic star ratings, the Hazard Scale is calibrated against altitude profiles, elevation gain per day, and logistical isolation factors — making it the most precise route classification system available.

Ausangate Circuit (The Sacred Apu)
EXTREME // LETHAL
persistent extreme topographical exposure: 90% of the trek is above 4,200m, with several nights spent camping at 4,600m or higher. Recovery from fatigue is very slow in this thin air.
unpredictable glacier-driven weather: The massive ice fields of Ausangate create their own microclimate. Snowstorms and sub-zero temperatures can occur within minutes even in the 'dry' season.
Route B // Hazard Verdict
Cerro Tronador (Refugio Otto Meiling)
MODERATE // CHLG
crevasses: Venturing onto the glaciers without a guide or technical training is extremely hazardous due to hidden crevasses.
rapid_weather_changes: High alpine exposure means severe storms can blow in quickly from the Pacific, even in summer.
