Full Route Report

The heart of the Himalaya. The Annapurna Sanctuary Walk, often simply called the Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) Trek, is a spectacular journey into a natural amphitheater surrounded by a ring of 7,000 and 8,000-meter peaks. Starting from the lush, sub-tropical foothills near Pokhara, the trail winds through terraced rice paddies, dense rhododendron forests, and bamboo thickets before entering the narrow Modi Khola gorge. The climax is the 'Sanctuary' itself—a high-altitude glacial basin where you stand at the foot of the massive south face of Annapurna I (8,091m) and the iconic, sacred peak of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail).

Full Route Report

This is Stage 1 of the world-famous Alpe-Adria-Trail. Starting at the dramatic high-alpine amphitheater of the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe (2,369m), the trail drops roughly 1,000 meters of descent into the legendary mountaineering village of Heiligenblut. You traverse the moraines of the Pasterze glacier, cross the dramatic turquoise Sandersee and Margaritzen reservoirs, and follow the Briccius trail past ancient chapels. The scenery transitions from raw, glacial desolation to the lush, flower-filled meadows of the Möll valley.

The HikeMetrics Hazard Scale is a proprietary 5-point classification system that evaluates hiking routes across five dimensions: physical demand, technical complexity, altitude exposure, weather risk, and rescue accessibility.

Unlike generic star ratings, the Hazard Scale is calibrated against altitude profiles, elevation gain per day, and logistical isolation factors — making it the most precise route classification system available.

Route A // Hazard Verdict
Annapurna Sanctuary Walk
MODERATE // CHALLENGING
avalanche risk in the modi khola gorge: The section between Dovan and MBC (Machhapuchhre Base Camp) is a narrow valley with steep walls prone to avalanches, especially after heavy winter snow or during the spring melt.
acute mountain sickness ams: The ascent from the bamboo forests to ABC is relatively fast, and the altitude of 4,130m is high enough to cause serious symptoms.
Route B // Hazard Verdict
The High Descent — Kaiser-Franz-Josef-Höhe to Heiligenblut
MODERATE // CHALLENGING
sustained eccentric load knees: A 1,200m descent is significantly harder on the joints than an equivalent ascent.
glacial moraine instability: The initial descent from the visitor center to the lake involves crossing shifting glacial debris.
