This modern trekking segment focuses on the 'Upper Tea Horse Road' between Lijiang and the Shangri-La plateau, passing through some of the most dramatic canyon landscapes in the world, including the Tiger Leaping Gorge. The route traverses high-altitude passes at 4,000m+, traditional Naxi and Tibetan villages, and deep river gorges. It is an immersive journey through the Silk Road's southwestern equivalent, combining high-altitude endurance with deep historical and cultural significance.

The HikeMetrics Hazard Scale is a proprietary 5-point classification system that evaluates hiking routes across five dimensions: physical demand, technical complexity, altitude exposure, weather risk, and rescue accessibility.

Unlike generic star ratings, the Hazard Scale is calibrated against altitude profiles, elevation gain per day, and logistical isolation factors — making it the most precise route classification system available.
