Mount Vesuvius (1,281m) or 'Gran Cono del Vesuvio' is a dormant but active stratovolcano managed by the Ente Parco Nazionale del Vesuvio. The primary trail ascends from the 1,000m staging area to the crater rim via wide, stabilized switchbacks of volcanic scoria and gravel. At the summit, the route follows a managed segment of the rim, offering direct visual access to the 300-meter-deep crater and views across the Bay of Naples, the Sarno plain, and the Pompeii archaeological site.

“High-Risk Urban Interface. Vesuvius is the only active volcano on the European mainland, currently in a dormant phase since the 1944 eruption. Its location is defined by the 'Zona Rossa' (Red Zone), where approximately 600,000 residents live in immediate proximity to the cone, part of a larger metropolitan region of 3 million. The trail allows observation of the internal crater architecture and residual fumarolic activity monitored by the Osservatorio Vesuviano.”
Hazard Assessment
On windy days, the fine volcanic ash and pumice whip through the air, and occasional sulfurous fumes from the crater can be unpleasant.
MITIGATION: Bring sunglasses to protect your eyes from the dust, and a buff or bandana to pull over your mouth if it gets windy.
The black volcanic rock absorbs and radiates heat, making the trail feel like an oven during July and August afternoons.
MITIGATION: Hike early in the morning and bring ample water, as the climb is steep despite being short.

CRITICAL: You should buy your ticket ONLINE IN ADVANCE. There is NO ticket office at the top, and cell service at the entrance gate is too weak to load the booking website. For volcanic activity updates, check Protezione Civile bulletins before departure.
