Lençóis Maranhenses is a vast field of mobile sand dunes positioned along Brazil's northeastern coast. The landscape is defined by the seasonal accumulation of rainwater in the valleys between dunes, creating thousands of clear freshwater lagoons from May through August. The 43km trekking traverse between Atins and Santo Amaro involves sustained walking across soft sand slopes and navigating between the remote Baixa Grande and Queimada dos Britos oases. The primary challenge is the combination of high thermal stress, intense solar reflection from the white sand, and the physical load of soft-substrate movement.
Mission Directive / X-Factor
“Rainwater Lagoons in the Dunes. The defining characteristic is the immersion in freshwater pools during a trek that otherwise feels like a desert crossing. The route offers direct exposure to a unique geological system where high-clarity rainwater lagoons are found directly behind massive, wind-driven dunes.”
Hazard Assessment
The bright white sand reflects UV radiation from below, doubling sun exposure. There is absolutely zero shade on the dunes.
MITIGATION: Many groups begin before sunrise (around 4-5 AM) to minimize midday exposure. Cease walking by 10:00 AM or 11:00 AM. Utilise full-coverage UV clothing and polarized eye protection.
The wind erases footprints in minutes. Every dune looks exactly the same, making navigation impossible without a guide.
MITIGATION: Hire an accredited local guide who knows the micro-geography and the families in the oasis.

Regulatory
- Permit REQUIRED
- Authority ICMBio
While the park is public, independent trekking is logistically difficult and rarely undertaken due to navigation and safety concerns. Accredited guides are standard for the multi-day crossing to facilitate access to the remote oases.
Climatology
- OptimalMay, Jun, Jul, Aug
Crucial timing: Visit May-August immediately after the rainy season when the lagoons are full. From September onward, most lagoons turn into dry sand pits.
