Victoria Peak Trail

EXTREME // LETHAL
Full Route Report

Belize's most demanding multi-day trek. Over three to four days you cover 27 km through dense tropical jungle, river crossings, and rugged granite ridgelines to reach Victoria Peak (1,120m) — the country's second-highest summit after Doyle's Delight (1,124m). The trail is only open in the dry season (February–May) and a certified guide from the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary is mandatory. The Maya Mountains are composed of ancient metamorphic and granitic rock — not alpine terrain, but remote tropical expedition terrain where heat, humidity, and isolation are the primary challenges.

Yading Nature Reserve (The Big Kora)

EXTREME // LETHAL
Full Route Report

The 'Big Kora' is an advanced outer circumambulation route rarely undertaken by independent hikers and subject to changing local regulations. Yading Nature Reserve, located in the Tibetan plateau of western Sichuan, is dominated by three sacred snow-capped peaks (Chenresig, Jambeyang, and Chanadorje). While many visitors complete the shorter day-hikes on boardwalks to Milk Lake, the 'Big Kora' (Outer Yading Trek) is a challenging 6-to-8-day high-altitude trek around all three peaks. Hikers navigate remote terrain including glacial lakes, forested valleys, and 4,700m+ passes, often sharing trails with Tibetan pilgrims and local wildlife.

EXTREME // LETHAL

The HikeMetrics Hazard Scale is a proprietary 5-point classification system that evaluates hiking routes across five dimensions: physical demand, technical complexity, altitude exposure, weather risk, and rescue accessibility.

Unlike generic star ratings, the Hazard Scale is calibrated against altitude profiles, elevation gain per day, and logistical isolation factors — making it the most precise route classification system available.

Victoria Peak Trail
EXTREME // LETHAL
heat and humidity stress: Temperatures regularly exceed 30°C with humidity above 90% in the lowlands. Dehydration and heat exhaustion are the primary physical risks.
steep terrain on loose substrate: Long, sustained climbs on loose granitic and metamorphic soil — slippery when wet.
Route B // Hazard Verdict
Yading Nature Reserve (The Big Kora)
EXTREME // LETHAL
extreme altitude sickness: Most of the route remains between 3,800m and 4,800m, with multiple passes exceeding 4,700m (15,400ft). AMS, HACE, and HAPE are constant threats.
weather and exposure: The weather on the plateau is notoriously sustained. Snowstorms can bury the passes in June, and the temperature drops below freezing every night.
