EXPERT // HAZARD
Full Route Report

The trek to Laguna de los Tres is one of the primary day activities in Los Glaciares National Park, providing a close-perspective view of the granite massif of Mount Fitz Roy (3,405m). The route follows an out-and-back trail through mixed forest and glaciated valleys, passing the Piedras Blancas viewpoint before the final ascent. The journey is defined by a significant transition from the low-lying valley floor to the high-alpine environment of the lagoon, which sits directly below the main peaks.

Full Route Report

The Valley of the Rocks is one of Exmoor's most famous and striking geological features. This very popular 3.8-mile (6km) circular walk starts in the picturesque Victorian cliff-top town of Lynton. The outward leg follows a relatively flat, fully paved section of the South West Coast Path, carved directly into the sheer cliff face high above the Bristol Channel. Upon reaching the Valley—a surreal, dry U-shaped valley littered with massive, jagged gritstone rock formations (tors) and a resident herd of feral goats—the route loops back inland via the higher ground of Hollerday Hill. It is a walk of immense, dramatic coastal views requiring very little sustained climbing.

The HikeMetrics Hazard Scale is a proprietary 5-point classification system that evaluates hiking routes across five dimensions: physical demand, technical complexity, altitude exposure, weather risk, and rescue accessibility.

Unlike generic star ratings, the Hazard Scale is calibrated against altitude profiles, elevation gain per day, and logistical isolation factors — making it the most precise route classification system available.

Route A // Hazard Verdict
Mount Fitz Roy (Cerro Fitz Roy)
EXPERT // HAZARD
high wind exposure: Strong winds are common in the Fitz Roy massif, particularly in the afternoon. Gusts can make the final ascent unstable in exposed conditions.
lower limb strain: The final descent is steep and rocky, which can strain knees and ankles on the return journey.
Route B // Hazard Verdict
Valley of the Rocks Loop
STANDARD // RT
the coast path drop: The paved section of the South West Coast Path from Lynton to the Valley is wide and level, but it is cut directly into a precipitous cliff edge dropping vertically hundreds of feet into the sea.
scrambling risks: Many people attempt to scramble up Castle Rock. The rock is sharp gritstone, and a fall can be serious.
