Full Route Report

The frozen wilderness. The Snow Lake trek is one of the world's premier high-altitude glacier traverses. Traversing the Biafo and Hispar glaciers, it covers a distance of over 120km, connecting the ancient kingdoms of Baltistan and Hunza. Snow Lake itself is a massive high-altitude ice basin (Lukpe Lawo) at 4,877m, spanning 16km in width. Surrounded by nameless granite spires and massive ice walls, this trek is a journey through a world that remains largely unchanged since the last ice age—a place of absolute silence, shifting crevasses, and monumental scale.

The HikeMetrics Hazard Scale is a proprietary 5-point classification system that evaluates hiking routes across five dimensions: physical demand, technical complexity, altitude exposure, weather risk, and rescue accessibility.

Unlike generic star ratings, the Hazard Scale is calibrated against altitude profiles, elevation gain per day, and logistical isolation factors — making it the most precise route classification system available.

Route A // Hazard Verdict
Larapinta Trail
EXTREME // LETHAL
thermal stress and dehydration: Daytime temperatures can exceed 35°C during warmer months, while winter nights commonly drop below 0°C.
abrasive quartzite terrain: The sharp, fractured quartzite surface causes accelerated mechanical wear on footwear and increases physical fatigue on lower limbs.
Route B // Hazard Verdict
Snow Lake & Biafo-Hispar La
EXTREME // LETHAL
complex glacier navigation and crevasses: Both the Biafo and Hispar glaciers are highly active. Hidden crevasses, especially after fresh snow, are a severe threat.
extreme high topographical exposure: Trekkers spend over a week above 4,500m. There is zero medical infrastructure and helicopter rescue is extremely difficult and weather-dependent.
