Once past the stairs, the valley opens into a pastoral world of historic mountain inns, chapels, and soaring vertical limestone walls.

This region is the ancestral home of the Dai people and home to China's last wild Asian elephants. It is a world away from the high-altitude glaciers of the north, offering a lush, humid, and biodiversity-rich adventure.
