Huemul Circuit

EXTREME // LETHAL
Full Route Report

Considered a premier multi-day trekking route in Los Glaciares National Park, the Huemul Circuit provides a circumnavigation of Cerro Huemul near El Chaltén. The route crosses two significant passes—Paso del Viento and Paso Huemul—offering direct panoramas of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field. Terrain varies from forested valley floors and river crossings to exposed glacial moraines and high-altitude scree slopes. The circuit is defined by its remoteness and the requirement for technical river crossing skills using fixed steel cables.

Volcán Misti Ascent

EXTREME // LETHAL
Full Route Report

Touching the sky above the White City. Volcán Misti (5,822m) is the symbolic guardian of Arequipa. While the climb is non-technical, it is a strenuous test of physical stamina and high-altitude adaptation. The 2-day journey begins with a 4x4 approach to the trailhead at 3,400m. From there, hikers endure a steep, zig-zagging climb through slippery volcanic ash and loose scree to reach a high camp (Nido de Águilas) at 4,600m. The summit push usually happens in the freezing darkness of 2:00 AM, leading to the giant crater rim where sulfur fumes and a massive iron cross mark the top. Standing on the summit, you are at an altitude equivalent to many of the world's highest mountains, with a panoramic view that stretches to the Pacific coast on clear days.

HikeMetrics Hazard Scale — Explanation

EXTREME // LETHAL

The HikeMetrics Hazard Scale is a proprietary 5-point classification system that evaluates hiking routes across five dimensions: physical demand, technical complexity, altitude exposure, weather risk, and rescue accessibility.

Unlike generic star ratings, the Hazard Scale is calibrated against altitude profiles, elevation gain per day, and logistical isolation factors — making it the most precise route classification system available.

extreme_winds: Winds on the high passes can be severe, particularly in summer afternoons. Gusts may make progress slow and unstable.
river_tyrolean_traverse: Two river crossings require the use of fixed steel cables (tyrolean traverses) and specialized gear.
Route B // Hazard Verdict
Volcán Misti Ascent
EXTREME // LETHAL
acute mountain sickness and oxygen deprivation: Gaining 2,400m in just 36 hours is extremely aggressive; oxygen levels at the summit are nearly 50% lower than at sea level.
extreme physical exhaustion on loose scrée: The descent involves 'sliding' down steep ash slopes, which is fast but can lead to ligament injuries and severe dust inhalation.
