Colca Canyon (Cabanaconde to Sangalle)

EXPERT // HAZARD
Full Route Report

Descending into the earth's crust. Colca Canyon is one of the deepest canyons in the world (3,400m). The classic trek starts in the high Andean town of Cabanaconde (3,280m) and involves a rapid, knee-jarring descent to the Colca River. Hikers pass through traditional Quechua villages where pre-Inca terraces are still active, before reaching the Sangalle Oasis—a lush, green sanctuary at the canyon floor. The return journey is an infamous pre-dawn 1,200m vertical climb that tests the lungs and legs of every hiker. Above, the sky is often filled with the massive silhouettes of Andean Condors, utilizing the morning thermals to rise out of the canyon's depths.

Perito Moreno Glacier Trail

EXPERT // HAZARD
Full Route Report

Guided glacier trekking on the Perito Moreno Glacier is a specialized activity within Los Glaciares National Park. The glacier, covering approximately 250 square kilometers, is one of the few advancing ice masses in the Patagonian Andes. Access to the ice surface is strictly regulated and conducted via two primary excursion formats: the 'Minitrekking' (introductory) and the 'Big Ice' (extended exploration). Participants navigate a dynamic landscape of crevasses, moulins, and ice ridges using technical equipment under professional supervision. The experience provides a direct perspective on glacial movement and the hydrological processes of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field.

The HikeMetrics Hazard Scale is a proprietary 5-point classification system that evaluates hiking routes across five dimensions: physical demand, technical complexity, altitude exposure, weather risk, and rescue accessibility.

Unlike generic star ratings, the Hazard Scale is calibrated against altitude profiles, elevation gain per day, and logistical isolation factors — making it the most precise route classification system available.

Route A // Hazard Verdict
Colca Canyon (Cabanaconde to Sangalle)
EXPERT // HAZARD
heat exhaustion and intense exposure: The canyon floor can be 10-15 degrees hotter than the rim, with almost no shade on the steep, zig-zag paths.
knee and joint strain from steep descent: The 1,200m descent is relentless and puts extreme pressure on the knees, especially with a heavy pack.
Route B // Hazard Verdict
Perito Moreno Glacier Trail
EXPERT // HAZARD
dynamic glacier surface: The glacier is in a state of constant motion, resulting in the shifting of ice formations, crevasses, and drainage channels.
high reflective glare: The albedo of the glacier surface results in high UV reflection, which can lead to rapid eye strain or solar retinopathy (snow blindness) without protection.
