The HikeMetrics Hazard Scale is a proprietary 5-point classification system that evaluates hiking routes across five dimensions: physical demand, technical complexity, altitude exposure, weather risk, and rescue accessibility.

Unlike generic star ratings, the Hazard Scale is calibrated against altitude profiles, elevation gain per day, and logistical isolation factors — making it the most precise route classification system available.

river crossing: Three chest-deep stream crossings precede the cave; after heavy rain the current strengthens significantly.
mechanical risks: Slippery wet limestone, low ceilings, and total darkness create head-injury and slip risks.
Route B // Hazard Verdict
The High Descent — Kaiser-Franz-Josef-Höhe to Heiligenblut
MODERATE // CHLG
sustained eccentric load knees: A 1,200m descent is significantly harder on the joints than an equivalent ascent.
glacial moraine instability: The initial descent from the visitor center to the lake involves crossing shifting glacial debris.
