The Lycian Way (Likya Yolu) is Turkey's first and most renowned long-distance trekking route. Stretching for roughly 540 kilometers from Fethiye (Ovacık) to Antalya, it is a spectacular collision of deep azure Mediterranean waters, rugged pine-clad mountains, and ancient history. The trail loosely traces the jagged coastline of the ancient Lycian civilization, a confederation of fierce naval city-states. Hikers walk on ancient Roman roads, narrow goat trails, and steep mountain passes, constantly moving between remote, pristine pebble beaches (like Kabak and Patara) and high alpine lookouts (like Mount Olympos/Tahtalı). Along the way, the path weaves directly through dozens of spectacular, overgrown ruins of ancient Lycian cities with their iconic rock-cut tombs.
Mission Directive / X-Factor
“Trekking Through Ancient Ruins. The 'X-Factor' is the raw, uncurated history. You aren't just looking at ruins behind a rope; you are physically walking on 2,000-year-old Roman aqueducts and camping next to Lycian sarcophagi and amphitheaters (like at Xanthos or Olympos) that are just sitting untouched in the pine forests.”
Hazard Assessment
In the summer months (June-August), temperatures can exceed 40°C. Many sections of the trail offer absolutely no shade or water sources.
MITIGATION: Do not hike in summer. In spring/autumn, carry a minimum of 3-4 liters of water per day and know exactly where the next village or cistern is.
The trail is not a manicured path. It is often a mass of loose, jagged limestone scree that shreds light shoes.
MITIGATION: Sturdy boots and trekking poles are often required to save your ankles and knees on the steep 1,000m daily descents.
