Technical Summary

This scenic trail follows one of Gran Canaria's 'Caminos Reales' (Royal Pathways), ancient routes used by the pre-Hispanic inhabitants. Starting at the high mountain pass of Cruz de Tejeda, the trail traces the sharp northern rim of a massive collapsed volcanic crater.

The Crux

The Cloud Forest and the Cave. The 'X-Factor' is the walk through the Canary Pine forest around Montaña de los Moriscos. These pines can survive fires and 'milk' water from the passing clouds. Emerging from the forest to find the ancient, enigmatic cave carvings while the entire central massif of the island spreads out below you is a transcendent experience.

Ideal For

Route Questions

01

Are the caves safe to enter?

Yes, they are shallow and easy to access, but do not touch the carvings as they are fragile archaeological heritage.

02

Do permit rules stay constant year-round?

Not always. Permit and guide requirements can change by season and region. Verify the latest rules with the official park office or local authority before departure.

03

What is the safest start-time strategy?

Start early and plan to clear exposed sections before midday. This reduces heat, storm, and visibility risk on most mountain routes.

04

How much water capacity is usually needed?

For exposed hiking days, carrying 2-3 liters is common. Increase capacity when refill reliability is low or temperatures are high.

05

Is mobile signal reliable on route?

Coverage is often patchy outside towns and major valleys. Treat phones as secondary tools and carry offline navigation resources.
