The Throne Room of the Mountain Gods. The trek to K2 Base Camp via the Baltoro Glacier is a monumental 140km journey into the heart of the Karakoram. Starting from the village of Askole, the trail winds up the massive Baltoro—one of the longest glaciers outside the poles—passing under the sheer granite cathedrals of Trango Towers and Cathedral Peak. The climax is Concordia (4,700m), the meeting point of the Baltoro and Godwin-Austen glaciers, where you are surrounded by the highest concentration of high peaks on Earth, including four 8,000m summits: K2, Broad Peak, and Gasherbrum I & II.

Hazard Assessment
Trekkers spend over a week above 4,000m. The trek is extremely remote, with no helicopter rescue possible in bad weather.
MITIGATION: Follow a strict multi-day acclimatization schedule in Skardu and during the approach; travel with a recognized agency that carries high-altitude emergency kits and satellite communication; ensure your insurance covers high-altitude heli-evacuation specifically for Pakistan.
Many itineraries include the crossing of the Gondogoro La (5,585m), which is a technical, high-altitude mountain pass with a risk of rockfall and steep ice.
MITIGATION: Only attempt the pass if you have basic crampon/ice axe skills and a competent guide; use the safety ropes fixed by the 'Rescue Team' at the top of the pass; check the conditions daily; if snow is too heavy, return via the Baltoro glacier instead.
Potential altitude-related conditions include AMS, HAPE, and HACE. Adequate acclimatization is essential.
MITIGATION: Strict adherence to hydration and gradual ascent protocols (climb high, sleep low).
