Rising majestically on the island of Vestvågøya in the Lofoten archipelago, Himmeltindan is the highest peak in the area. The literal translation is 'Peaks of Heaven,' and the views justify the name. The hike is typically an out-and-back route measuring roughly 4.6 miles (7.5km) in total. Note that the absolute highest peak (962m) is occupied by a NATO radar installation and is strictly off-limits (and guarded). Therefore, hikers aim for the dramatic South Summit (931m). From there, you are rewarded with a 360-degree panorama of the white-sand beaches of Haukland and Uttakleiv below, surrounded by the jagged black peaks rising straight out of the Norwegian Sea.
Mission Directive / X-Factor
“The Midnight Sun Peak. The 'X-Factor' is the location and altitude. Because Himmeltindan is the highest unobstructed peak on the island facing the open northern ocean, it is arguably the best hike in all of Lofoten for experiencing the Midnight Sun (from late May to mid-July). Standing at 931m at 1:00 AM, watching the sun dip to the horizon and immediately rise again over the Arctic Ocean, is an unforgettable, surreal experience.”
Hazard Assessment
The first phase is flat, but the actual ascent is a grueling, non-stop upward grind of 900m over a very short distance. The turf and rock are highly slippery when wet.
MITIGATION: Trekking poles are almost often required to save your knees on the descent. Do not hike in heavy rain.
The North Summit is an active military radar station. Approaching it or photographing the installation is illegal.
MITIGATION: Stop at the South Summit (931m). The trail logically terminates there anyway.
