The edge of the world. The Hump Ridge Track is a 61km loop that traverses some of New Zealand's most remote and rugged Southern coastline and sub-alpine ridges. Officially designated as a Great Walk in late 2024, it offers a challenging but rewarding 3-day journey. You start at sea level, climb through ancient podocarp forest to the 'Hump'—a sub-alpine ridge with 360-degree views of the Southern Ocean, Fiordland, and Stewart Island—and then descend to cross historic timber viaducts including the massive Percy Burn viaduct, the largest wooden trestle bridge of its kind in the southern hemisphere.

Mission Directive / X-Factor

The Percy Burn Viaduct and the Southern Ocean Roar. The 'X-Factor' is the intersection of wild nature and industrial history. Walking across the soaring Percy Burn viaduct, high above a forest canopy, feels like stepping into a forgotten era of frontier logging. This is paired with the visceral experience of the Southern Ocean; standing on the 'Hump' at sunset with the wind roaring off the Antarctic ice shelf and looking out at the jagged coastline of Fiordland is a moment of pure, raw wilderness power.

Hazard Assessment

extreme sub alpine exposurePRIORITY 1

The ridge section (The Hump) is notorious for sudden storms, gale-force winds, and snow even in summer.

MITIGATION: Check the specific mountains forecast at the Tuatapere base; carry a heavy-duty waterproof jacket and multiple thermal layers; be prepared to stay in the hut if visibility or wind speeds become dangerous.

long strenuous daysPRIORITY 1

The track involves long distances (20km+ days) with significant elevation changes, which can lead to fatigue.

MITIGATION: Build up your endurance before attempting the track; start early (before 8 AM) each day to ensure completion before dark; carry sufficient high-energy snacks and electrolytes.
