The odyssey of diversity. The Heaphy Track is the longest of New Zealand's Great Walks, stretching 78.4km from the Aorere Valley in Golden Bay to Kohaihai on the West Coast. It is a journey of extreme contrast: starting in ancient beech forests, ascending to the Sub-alpine tussock downs of Gouland Downs (home to the Great Spotted Kiwi), and descending through lush podocarp forest to the coastal palm groves. Unlike the steep verticality of the Milford, the Heaphy is a more gradual, long-distance traverse that allows hikers to experience the full spectrum of New Zealand's wilderness ecosystems in one continuous line.
Mission Directive / X-Factor
“The Nikau Palms and the Jurassic Coast. The 'X-Factor' is the final coastal section. Walking under the giant, tropical-looking Nikau palms as the thundering waves of the Tasman Sea crash onto the driftwood-strewn beaches of the West Coast feels like stepping back into a Jurassic era. The transition from the cold, misty alpine downs to this warm, tropical-looking coastline in just a few days is one of the most unique geographical shifts in the Southern Hemisphere.”
Hazard Assessment
Sections of the lower Heaphy valley and the coastal track are prone to rapid flooding during heavy rain and inundation at high tide.
MITIGATION: Check tide charts before starting the coastal section (Crayfish Point); never attempt to cross flooded rivers or boardwalks—wait in the nearest hut for the water to recede; check for track alerts at the Brown Hut or Kohaihai ranger stations.
The West Coast sections and river mouth of the Heaphy are legendary for their high concentrations of biting sandflies.
MITIGATION: Carry high-quality repellent containing DEET or Picaridin; wear long-sleeved clothing during rest breaks and at the huts; keep hut doors and fly-screens closed at all times.
