The Sentiero Azzurro (Blue Trail) is the primary coastal hiking route on the Italian Riviera, connecting the five villages of the Cinque Terre National Park. Tracing the rugged coastline of the Ligurian Sea, this historic 12-kilometer route links Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Monterosso al Mare. The trail traverses centuries-old terraced vineyards and olive groves, utilizing established stone staircases and coastal paths. While landslide activity frequently affects specific lower-level segments (such as the Via dell'Amore), the route remains a definitive example of Mediterranean walking and is a core part of the UNESCO-listed cultural landscape.
Mission Directive / X-Factor
“Segmental Resupplies. The logistical advantage of the Sentiero Azzurro is the high density of resupply points. Visitors frequently report that the trail's physical load (repetitive steep stairs) is mitigated by the the proximity of village plazas offering local focaccia and Sciacchetrà wine at the end of each 60-90 minute section.”
Hazard Assessment
During July and August, temperatures on the exposed cliff sides can be high. The reflection of sunlight off the water and stone surfaces creates a demanding thermal environment.
MITIGATION: July and August are characterized by high temperatures; scheduling hikes for early morning hours and carrying significant water supplies is recommended.
The trail involves extensive sections of uneven, stone steps. Inadequate footwear can lead to slips and ankle sprains.
MITIGATION: Proper walking shoes with grip are required. In recent seasons, park authorities have fined hikers wearing unsuitable footwear (such as flip-flops or smooth-soled sandals) on certain trail sections.
