The Basses Gorges (Lower Gorges) of the Verdon offer a dramatic yet accessible Provencal hiking experience in the Parc Naturel Régional du Verdon. This 10km loop, starting near the village of Quinson, traces the green waters of the lower Verdon River along the remains of the 19th-century Canal du Verdon. The trail features narrow ledges secured with metal cables, dark hand-hewn tunnels, and steep stone staircases. After following the river, the route climbs to a high plateau, passing the historic Chapelle Sainte-Maxime before returning to the valley center. It is a unique journey blending industrial archaeology with the wild limestone landscapes of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. Note: Compiled from public sources — not a field report.
Mission Directive / X-Factor
“The Canal Walkway. The 'X-Factor' is the unique industrial archaeology of walking along the narrow, flat ledge of the abandoned 19th-century canal. Secured with metal cables and handrails, the path provides a continuous, close-up perspective of the bright green river as it winds through the deep limestone gorge. The transition from the enclosed canyon floor to the open, aromatic plateau at Sainte-Maxime offers a classic Provencal landscape contrast.”
Hazard Assessment
The path along the old canal is narrow in several sections. While secured with metal cables, it runs directly over significant drops into the river, which can be challenging for those with vertigo.
MITIGATION: Utilize the handrail cables consistently. Small children must be closely supervised and kept on the rock-side of the path.
The route passes through several old canal tunnels carved into the rock. They are pitch black, very low, and often the floor is covered in deep, muddy puddles.
MITIGATION: A headlamp or a fully charged phone flashlight is highly recommended to avoid slamming your head into the low ceiling.
