The world's longest outdoor museum. The Chilkoot Trail is a 53km (33-mile) legendary route that spans from Dyea, Alaska, across the Chilkoot Pass into British Columbia, Canada. It follows the exact path of the 1898 Klondike Gold Rush, where 'stampeders' were forced by the North-West Mounted Police to carry a ton of supplies across the summit in multiple trips. Today, the trail is littered with rusted stoves, leather boots, and broken machinery left behind over a century ago. You transition from coastal rainforest to the stark alpine 'Golden Stairs' and finally into the boreal forests of the Canadian north. It is a profound intersection of history and wilderness.
Mission Directive / X-Factor
“The Golden Stairs and the Ghost Town Final. The defining moment is the ascent of the 'Golden Stairs'—a steep 1,000-foot scramble up massive granite boulders to reach the summit of the pass. Many hikers describe reaching the top in rain or mist as a powerful historical moment, surrounded by the same landscape the 1898 stampeders faced. The hike ends at Lake Bennett, a remote ghost town accessible only by foot or the historic White Pass & Yukon Route train, giving the finish a tangible sense of stepping back in time.”
Hazard Assessment
The Chilkoot Pass (1,067m) is notorious for sudden weather shifts, high winds, and dense fog even in mid-summer. The pass acts as a weather funnel between coastal and interior air masses.
MITIGATION: Do not attempt the pass if visibility is poor or a storm is imminent; there are no staffed shelters between Sheep Camp and Happy Camp (approx. 8-10 hours of exposed terrain); bring a fully waterproof jacket and pack cover—rain is common even in mid-summer.
Both black bears and grizzly bears are very active along the trail, particularly near the Taiya River.
MITIGATION: Bear spray is strongly recommended; use the designated bear-resistant food storage provided at all campsites; never eat inside your tent; make noise when hiking through dense brush.
The Golden Stairs section involves 1-2 hours of sustained, steep scrambling on boulders that are slippery when wet.
MITIGATION: Ensure your pack is well-balanced; use trekking poles for the approach but stow them for the scramble to have hands free; focus on three points of contact at all times.
