This is Stage 1 of the world-famous Alpe-Adria-Trail. Starting at the dramatic high-alpine amphitheater of the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe (2,369m), the trail drops roughly 1,000 meters of descent into the legendary mountaineering village of Heiligenblut. You traverse the moraines of the Pasterze glacier, cross the dramatic turquoise Sandersee and Margaritzen reservoirs, and follow the Briccius trail past ancient chapels. The scenery transitions from raw, glacial desolation to the lush, flower-filled meadows of the Möll valley.

Into the belly of the wadi. Muqal Cave is located at the upper reaches of Wadi Bani Khalid—Oman's most famous and accessible year-round wadi. The trail starts from the large, palm-fringed swimming pools and climbs about 1 kilometer deeper into the canyon over white limestone boulders and narrow paths. The hike culminates at the entrance of the Muqal Cave, where visitors can crawl through a narrow opening to discover a vast, dark subterranean chamber with underground river systems and unique rock formations. It is a perfect micro-adventure that combines swimming, hiking, and basic caving.
